Good morning, Respectable Deputy Mayor, Dr. Peter Rickets, Mr. Noel Buckley, Dr. Li Xiangnong

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

I am honored to stand here to speak on behalf of Wuhan Tourism Administration and Wuhan Branch of China Tourism Academy.

First of all, I would like to express warm congratulation to the opening of the Chain-Canada Tourism Research Centre!

As a partner institution, Wuhan Branch of China Tourism Academy is a professional tourism research organization, accredited by China National Tourism Administration and jointly managed by Central China Normal University and Hubei Provincial Tourism Administration. It plays an important role as an academic platform combining the government, research institution, and tourism industry, and other stakeholders to explore hot topics and important issues in tourism. Wuhan Branch of China Tourism Academy has a council to direct the operation and strategy, and the chairperson and vice chairperson of the council are respectively the director of Hubei Provincial Tourism Administration and the director of Wuhan Tourism Administration.

The establishment of China-Canada Tourism Research Centre is to extend the teaching and research of Confucius Institute and Wuhan Branch of China Tourism Academy. With tourism as the driving force and by exchanges and cooperation between governments, enterprises and the people, I believe this center will enhance mutual understanding and promote cooperation and development between Wuhan and Ottawa, Hubei andOntario.

Now, please let me introduce Wuhan to you.

Wuhan, is a beautiful city on fresh water. If you look at Wuhan from Google map, you may find the city is located just at the heart of the Rooster-shaped China map. Yangtze River and Han River run through Wuhan city and divide Wuhan into three parts, that is, Hankou, Wuchang, and Hanyang. There are not only big rivers but also 157 lakes in Wuhan. In China, no other city like Wuhan has so many rivers and lakes with such unique landscape of Wuhan, and that makes Wuhan so special in the world.

Wuhan is a large metropolitan city along the middle reaches of Yangtze River, the capital city of Hubei Province, and a developing National Center City and International city. As an important industry base, science/education base, and transportation hub in China, Wuhan covers 8494 square kilometers of land, and is home to 12 million residents.

Wuhan has a long history. According to the archaeological discovery from Panlong City—relic of the then Wuhan City, have 3500 years history. To Ming dynasty, 500 years ago, Wuhan had become an important city in China. In 1861, Hankou opened as trade port, marking the beginning of Wuhan’s modern economy and foreign trade business with the world. Since 1889, Wuhan has developed into China’s modern industrial base, financial center, business port, and transportation hub. Unprecedented prosperity makes this thousands-year old city entitled a new name—— ‘Oriental Chicago’.

Wuhan has been developing into an amazing modern city on the basis of its brilliant history. Dozens of bridges over rivers and lakes, viaducts, tunnels across rivers and big lakes, light rails and subways have made up the effective transportation system. Wuhan is one of China’s six biggest aviation centres, one of four biggest railway centres, and the hub of China’s high speed railway system. Now, Wuhan has opened direct flights to Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, France, and Hongkong, Macao, and Taiwan. The Wuhan government is now planning to open the direct flight from Wuhan to the USA, which will bring Wuhan and the whole North America great opportunity for tourism development.

At present, three countries, USA, France and South Korea, have set up consulate general in Wuhan, and Wuhan is the only city homing three consulates general in central China, Canada has its Canadian Commercial Corporation Office in Wuhan.

In Wuhan, tourism has become one of its primary industries for its economy. There are some amazing scenic spots in Wuhan, like the “eighth world wonder” --ancient Chime Bells, “No. 1 tower in the world”—Yellow Crane Tower, China’s biggest inner-city lake—the East Lake National Park, and China’s biggest recreation park—Hankou Yangtze River Beach Park. And you can taste Wuhan-style local food in its famous gastronomy street—Hubu Street, which is called “No. 1 Street for Whuhan-style snacks”, established in Ming Dynasty 500 years ago. Wuhan’s tourism revenue and tourism arrivals have annually increased by 30% during last 3 consecutive years. In 2011, tourism revenue in Wuhan has reached one hundred billion Yuan (about $18 billion), making Wuhan a member of China’s “One Hundred Billion Yuan Tourism Revenue Club”. The number of tourists to Wuhan is still increasing year by year.

Wuhan, is rich in water, prosperous by water, beautiful for water, and special with water. Big river, big lake, big Wuhan, ladies and gentlemnt, welcome to beautiful Wuhan!

Wuhan not only warmly welcomes guests from all over the world; Wuhan residents are also very interested in travelling around the world. According to statistics, about 800 thousand Wuhan residents make their outbound travels every year, which is increasing very fast.

With the increasing exchange between China and Canada, tourism cooperation between us will become closer and closer. Not only for tourism resources development and tourism service promotion, but also for tourism consumption, there is huge potential for regional partnership between Wuhan and Ottawa.

Ladies and gentlemen, we can enhance our tourism promotion in each other market, develop different tourism products to meet the needs from different segmented markets, promote cooperation in all circles related to tourism, like travel agencies, hospitality hotels , airlines, and increase exchange between tourism educational and research organizations. We can deepen mutual understanding, to expand cooperation on the basis of trust. Ottawa has its advantages in tourism-related technology, management and business patterns, which is very helpful to sustainable tourism development in Wuhan. Meanwhile, Wuhan has abundant human resources, traditional culture-based unique service, and ever increasing tourism demands. Both advantages form the practical foundation for bilateral tourism industrial cooperation.

It can be predicted that, Chain-Canada tourism will be more healthy, harmonious and sustainable. And I am sure the tourism future in Canada and China will be even more prosperous!

      Thank you!
