Course description This course will reveal the complex system of tourism through an exploration of the macro-level forces that both impact and are impacted by the tourism industry. The course will apply a system thinking approach to understanding complexity theory applied to tourism and the feedback loops that make up the tourism system. Course description NRRT 602 is the second installment in quantitative analysis coursework through the Master of Tourism Management Program at Colorado State University. This course is designed to build on practical manipulative and analytic methods covered in NRRT 601 through application of these methods, known as “Analytics,” to real-world tourism problems. The course also introduces students to new concepts; local, regional, national and international data sources; and applications for data-driven, fact-based decision making in the tourism management context. Quantitative analysis, or analytics, is a broad and complex field. Course description In the first section of this course we will look at the Philosophy and History of the conservation movement in the U.S. and the development of natural resource tourism here; as well as the broader Tourism System. We Will also look at the covenants that have been established worldwide, in the form of the UN Convention on Climate Change and Bio Diversity, that govern international development policies and the conservation of scarce global resources. In addition, we will examine the role of tourism as a development tool internationally and as an economic driver here in the U.S. In the second section of the course we will examine the measurement of natural resource supply, demand and economic impact; as well as the role of these measures in the comprehensive planning process for recreation resource management at the federal, state and local levels. Course description NRRT655 focuses on enhancing the student’s understanding of the concepts underlying the management of an effective marketing function of a travel and tourism organization and the application of those concepts to the development of a marketing plan for a travel and tourism organization. The first part of the course provides a description of the marketing process as it relates to travel and tourism, the unique nature of travel and tourism marketing as compared to the marketing of manufactured products and other services, as well as a descriptive introduction to the components of and steps in developing a marketing plan. The second part of the course describes the processes for developing marketing opportunities and strategies for a travel and tourism organization. This includes a description of the dynamic business environment that influences the demand for travel and tourism and the use of marketing research to understand consumer and organizational buyer behavior, and ultimately, the development and application of market segmentation, targeting, and positioning. The third part of this course begins the discussion of the development of the travel and tourism marketing mix with a focus on the product, internal marketing, pricing considerations, and distribution.
